Analysis of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) broodstock pilot scale production. ArchiMer
Omnes, Marie-helene; Normant, Yvon; Suquet, Marc; Fauvel, Christian.
Rearing turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) reaches the commercial scale. With the hatchery output increasing, more attention needs to be focussed on broodstocks performance both in terms of quantity and viability of eggs. The techniques of shifting the environmental conditions allow a production of eggs all year round. However, egg quality tends to be highly variable. This paper examines over a two-year period, the improvement in egg quality and its consequences on the production of larvae by a strict management of spawners.

Bacterial environment of gametes and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) eggs. ArchiMer
Omnes, Marie-helene; Temey, Yann; Daniel, Jean-yves; Nicolas, Jean-louis.
Bacterial infections have been suspected to be one cause of variable success in the incubation of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) eggs. The assessment of bacterial flora (bacterial environment) associated with ova, sperm and developing eggs was conducted just at stripping gametes and during incubation. Gametes were collected in sterile conditions before fertilization. Eggs were held in an open-circulation 401 incubator, at 13 degree C during 6 days until hatching. Samples of those were collected every day. They were rinsed several times with sterile seawater, counted and grown. Viable counts of bacteria were determined on two media, Zobell and TCBS agar. Epibiotic bacteria on the surface of the eggs and impact on the chorion were observed at scanning...

Cod (Gadus morhua) rearing attempts in France ArchiMer
Suquet, Marc; Omnes, Marie-helene; Normant, Yvon; Petton, Bruno; Severe, Armelle; Fauvel, Christian; Barone, Herve; Quemener, Loic; Buchet, Vincent; Pasco, Laurent; Menard, E; Gaignon, Jean-louis.
Because of its rapid growth, its good reputation and the promising aquaculture experiences conducted in Norway and Scotland, cod is considered as a good candidate for cold water aquaculture. The aim of this paper is to present the work carried out in France since 1999: the selection of cod as a promising candidate for aquaculture and the assessment of its rearing performances in this environment.

Effect of stripping frequency on turbot spawn quality. ArchiMer
Fauvel, Christian; Omnes, Marie-helene; Suquet, Marc; Normant, Yvon.
In production operations the application of daily examination of each female of broodstock should be a determinant progress in hatchery management in terms of fry output. The eggs expelled shortly after ovulation by means of a systematic fivefold a week stripping attempt of females, presented a high viability rate (72%) compared to that of eggs collected twice a week (46%) whereas the treatments did not have any effect on female fecundity. Increase of the stripping rhythm brought the hatching rates and broodstock fertilities respectively from 11% to 35% and from 20,000 to 65,000 larvae/kg of spawning female. The enhancement of egg quality and of the resulting larva production is discussed.

Effect of temperature, volume of ova batches, and addition of a diluent, an antibiotic, oxygen and a protein inhibitor on short-term storage capacities of turbot, Psetta maxima, ova ArchiMer
Suquet, Marc; Chereguini, Olvido; Omnes, Marie-helene; Rasines, Inmaculada; Normant, Yvon; Souto, Isabel; Quemener, Loic.
The effect of different parameters on shea-term storage capacity of turbot ova was assessed over a 45-h period after ova collection for fertilization rates and over a 9-h period after ova collection for hatching rates. Increasing the volume of ova sampling from 0.5 to 2.5 mt, as well as adding an antibiotic-antimicotic solution or oxygen did not significantly change the storage capacity of ova. Regarding the hatching rates, a higher storage ability was recorded at 8 and 13 degrees C, compared to 3 degrees C. The mean composition of the ovarian fluid was determined (n = 57 spawns). Use of a diluent mimicking the ovarian fluid significantly decreased the storage ability as assessed by the fertilization rates but did not modify the hatching rates. Diluting...

Effects of dietary tannin on growth, feed utilization and digestibility, and carcass composition in juvenile European seabass ( Dicentrarchus labrax L.) ArchiMer
Omnes, Marie-helene; Le Goasduff, Julien; Le Delliou, Herve; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Quazuguel, Patrick; Robin, Jean.
Plant-based products in fish diets are valuable protein alternatives to fishmeal for the aquafeed industry. Many plant feed ingredients contain polyphenolic compounds, including tannins, which can have beneficial or adverse effects. The tolerable threshold of ingested tannins is unknown for marine carnivorous fishes. We studied the effects of tannic acid (TA) supplementation to the diet of juvenile European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) by measuring growth, feed utilization and digestibility, and carcass composition. We randomly allocated groups of fish (initial mean body weight of 10.2 ± 0.7 g; n = 40 fish per tank) to 12 replicate cylindrical-conical tanks (three per treatment). The fish were assigned to one of four dietary treatments for five weeks:...

Egg production in the turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) in relation to broodstock management ArchiMer
Omnes, Marie-helene; Normant, Yvon; Suquet, Marc; Fauvel, Christian.
Egg production data from individual hand stripped female turbot were collected and analysed over several consecutive spawning seasons, on natural or shifted conditions. Egg quantity, egg viability and number of spawns were examined from one spawning season to the other, and inside the spawning season. These parameters seemed to increase from a year to the next one, except for the oldest fishes. Spawns were spread over a three-month period and occurred at the same time in the period in successive seasons for most females. Egg production seemed related to the feeding level and the earliness of spawning season appeared depended on the growth rate. Without sand substrate in tanks, injuries could increase therefore no significant differences were observed in...

Etude de la répartition du zooplancton et de l'ichthyoplancton en fonction de l'hydrologie sur le site de Plogoff (Finistère). Complément à l'étude de Projet ArchiMer
Camus, Patrick; Omnes, Marie-helene; Delpech, Jean-paul.

Morizur, Yvon; Conan, Gérard; Guenole, A.; Omnes, Marie-helene.
Females of the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L.) incubate their eggs under the abdomen for a period of several months. The authors estimated the individual fecundity of N. norvegicus (1) before spawning, and (2) at the end of the incubation period. From these two relationships, they then calculated the average egg loss. Egg loss seems to be relatively higher for small females than for large ones. The mean egg loss estimated for the Bay of Biscay (45%) differs from the only other existing value (75%) calculated by other authors for Portuguese waters. Egg loss may regulate stock-density, and may be a mechanism intervening in stock-recruitment.

Fluctuations d'abondance de l'ichtyoplancton sur une zone frontale cotiere (Golfe de Gascogne: Baie d'Audierne) ArchiMer
Camus, Patrick; Delpech, Jean-paul; Omnes, Marie-helene; Mastail, Max.
A two years ichthyoplankton sampling program over an eight station network on each side of a coastal tidal front was conducted twice a month during neap tides. A principal component analysis was performed on the data (taxa and observations) which were segregated during the summer into two groups of taxa related to two groups of stations belonging to two different hydrodynamical areas. In July and August 1980 during a tide cycle, zooplankton was investigated at two stations in the stratified and transitional area. Periodic fluctuations of meroplanktonic taxa correlated to the movement of the front induced by the tide were observed.

Growth and reproductive performances of juveniles and sexually mature pollack Pollachius pollachius in different conditions ArchiMer
Omnes, Marie-helene; Severe, Armelle; Barone, Herve; Suquet, Marc; Buchet, Vincent; Le Roux, Annick; Gaignon, Jean-louis; Fostier, Alexis; Fauvel, Christian.
The pollack Pollachius pollachius is a commercially important fish, considered as a candidate for aquaculture in France. Rearing attempts are promising (Suquet et al., 1996), and more information is required about its reproduction, to contribute to a better management of breeders for this species. This study was designed to examine the first maturity in pollack and the effects of conditions such as origin and delayed reproduction season, on gonad maturation, reproductive and growth performances of adults.

Influence of dry diets on reproductive performance and egg lipid composition during the first spawning season of captive pollack ArchiMer
Omnes, Marie-helene; Recek, Sophie; Barone, Herve; Le Delliou, Herve; Schmitz, Audrey; Mutelet, Alexis; Suquet, Marc; Robin, Jean H..
Four‐year‐old pollack Pollachius pollachius L., previously fed on dry pellets since their juvenile stage, were divided into three experimental groups two months prior their first spawning season. They were fed a commercial broodstock pellet enriched with 6% added oils, either: (1) capelin oil (control), (2) capelin oil plus arachidonic acid, or (3) DHA rich tuna oil. Spawning performance was determined in each group and egg lipids were analysed. During the vitellogenic period, the estradiol levels in plasma increased with oocyte enlargement, indicating that captivity and pelleted feed did not affect reproductive capacity. Females from each group spawned spontaneously between February and May. Egg production per kg of female was highest in the control...

Influence of lupin and rapeseed meals on the integrity of digestive tract and organs in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) and goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) juveniles ArchiMer
Omnes, Marie-helene; Silva, Francisco; Moriceau, Jacques; Aguirre, P.; Kaushik, Sadasivam; Gatesoupe, F. J..
Two rearing trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary lupin (LM) and rapeseed (RM) meals in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) and goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) juveniles. Each plant meal was incorporated at the rate of 200 g kg−1 in two distinct diets, which were compared with a fishmeal-based diet as control. After 1 month, the two plant diets did not influence the whole body growth, but the digestive systems were affected. The splenosomatic index was reduced with two plant meals in goldfish and with RM in seabream. The hepatosomatic index was only reduced in LM-fed seabream. Cellular characteristics were also affected. The largest liver cells were observed in RM-fed goldfish suggesting changes in metabolic function. The LM and RM...

Long-term effects of the cryopreservation of turbot (Psetta maxima) spermatozoa ArchiMer
Suquet, Marc; Dreanno, Catherine; Petton, Bruno; Normant, Yvon; Omnes, Marie-helene; Billard, Roland.
The survival of turbot eggs and the rearing capacities of larvae stemmed from artificial fertilization practices using frozen-thawed spermatozoa were evaluated. Furthermore, the viability of sperm samples stored during a 9 month period in liquid nitrogen was assessed. No significant difference in the fertilization rate, hatching rate, survival and wet weight of 10-day old larvae were observed using fresh or frozen-thawed spermatozoa. The motility recorded at 10 s and 60 s post-activation and the fertilization capacity of frozen-thawed spermatozoa were not significantly decreased during a 9 month storage period in liquid nitrogen. These results confirm the high quality of the turbot spermatozoa stemmed from the cryopreservation process, allowing their use...

Long-term exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) through diet affects embryonic development of common sole (Solea solea) ArchiMer
Omnes, Marie-helene; Lemerre, Charlotte; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Le Delliou, Herve; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Munschy, Catherine; Loizeau, Veronique.
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers), are lipophilic and tend to bioaccumulate in cellular membranes and fat. The accumulation of lipids in oocytes during vitellogenesis, and subsequently in the eggs, favors the accumulation of POPs, and may affect the development of embryos. The effects of dietary exposure to POPs in Common sole Solea solea were evaluated on early life stages (ELS): the survival of sole embryos and features of embryonic development were assessed until hatching endpoint and compared to that of the control. No embryonic development was observed in PBDE eggs while hatching occurred in both control and PCB groups. In addition, several developmental...

Pollack (Pollachius pollachius): Acquisition of biologic data in a breeding purpose ArchiMer
Buchet, Vincent; Suquet, Marc; Omnes, Marie-helene; Petton, Bruno; Normant, Yvon; Severe, Armelle; Quemener, Loic; Barone, Herve; Fauvel, Christian; Gaignon, Jean-louis.
The fishing of pollack which concerns essentially, France, United Kingdom and Norway, and at a lower level Ireland and Denmark, is situated between 10 and 15000 tons a year. In 1996, France was the first producer of Pollack. Since 1980, a decrease of production is observed in Europe. In France, landing reached 3000t. in 1998 (Suquet, 2001). However, the demand remaining strong, aquaculture could be a solution to satisfy the deficit between the French production and the domestic demand.
